It’s the summer holidays and we’re on the move traveling around Europe visiting family and friends. It’s a beautiful and magical time topping up our pot of memories and at the same time a challenge to stay centered and clear headed. In order to help support me during these times on the move, I use a traveling alter.
My traveling alter varies each time I travel and usually consists of something simple to support me while I meditate in order to establish a sense of grounding in my new surrounding. When I went backpacking in Australia 10 years ago after I had finished university, I discovered the benefits that a traveling alter offered to help me create a space of home where ever I went.
The picture above shows what my traveling alter consists of this time, however it is usually has at least one of the following key items:
- My journal
- Tea light candles & matches (cook’s matches are my preference for matches – I love the smell that the match leaves after it’s been blown out)
- Mala beads
- Oracle Cards
- Sage stick
- Essential oils (lavender is my favourite)
I like to take at least 15-30 minutes at the start of each day to reflect on all of the feelings that I want to experience that day. It usually starts with me lighting a candle setting an intention and then burning some sage to clear the space around me. Burning sage isn’t always possible because obviously I have to be respectful of where I’m traveling, so that’s where my lavender essential oil comes in handy. I like to journal, do some yoga stretches and end with a meditation.
Being on the move doesn’t always allow this time, so some mornings it’s a simple 5 minutes reflecting on an oracle card or taking some conscious breaths to find that space of grounding.
When I’m at home I usually have an oil burner on the go with a delicious blend of essential oils that help create the mood I want to create. Traveling with a porcelain oil burner isn’t practical so I was delighted when I went into Neal’s Yard Remedies on this trip and found this delicious smelling Organic Aromatherapy Room Spray. They have a range of blends available and ‘Balancing’ ticked all of the boxes for me. I have given each bedroom that we have stayed in a few squirts of this. It’s a small thing, but it’s made such a huge difference.
